Why choose this course?

  • this course is not therapy, although it has a therapeutic effect, but offers a powerful educational programme
  • the tools it teaches are both profound and accessible
  • low self esteem accompanies traumatic childhood experiences of familial abuse
  • it is often at the root of self injurious behaviours
  • when self esteem is low our life is often characterised by fear, not love
  • being given a mental health diagnosis can couple low self esteem to feelings of despair and guilt
  • accessing our self esteem enables us to have internal peace and contentment
  • this course fits into the recovery model for mental distress
  • positive results ~ a sense of hopefulness for the future, in some cases a cessation or reduction in self harming, the ability to share feelings without shame and to give and receive support. When offered to young men with schizophrenia it had a transformative effect.

Length of course: 12 sessions of 2 – 2½ hours

Expected outcomes: by the end of the course participants will be able to

  • notice when they are being affected by inner demands and accusations
  • know how to tell the truth about themselves and make life affirming choices
  • galvanise their inner resources and their creative energies
  • understand a new concept of how to grasp personal strengths and potential
  • attain a new insight into the nature of self esteem
  • differentiate between being driven and having drive
  • see value in the experiences given by life
  • access their most profound inspiration in life
  • be themselves with others, creating deeper connections through fuller expression
  • use processes to deal positively with previously ‘negative’ situations
  • enhance the self esteem of others using their own insights

Nature of training:

Maximum of 8 participants with physical or sensory impairment, up to 15 for staff members. The course utilises small group work, individual processing and some lecture style input. A video supports this training. Each participant is given a set of 3 CDs.

Depending on the support needs of the participants there will be a ration of either 1:3 or 1:2 for facilitation composed of mentor/s plus support team.

This course has skills that can be passed on to users of your service. Opportunities exist for staff members to become qualified mentors in self esteem.
