Why choose this course?

• adult safeguarding (or protecting adults) is an integral part of all service delivery cf. No secrets Dept Health 2000, Mental capacity act 2005,ADSS Safeguarding Adults 2005, National Minimum Standards
• managers often neglect to give themselves the training needed to supervise and support their staff who are directly dealing with safeguarding issues
• managers may be the Named Lead for adult safeguarding in their organisation
• managers need to know the legislative framework within which to respond and local policy and procedures
• positive results ~ more confidence in dealing with complex abuse issues, increased credibility and support to supervised staff and an enhanced ability to work on adult safeguarding in a multi agency context

Length of course: 1 day 9.30 – 4.30

Expected outcomes ~ by the end of the course participants will be able to

• support staff, service users and themselves by being able to:
• recognise abuse ~ categories, signs, risk factors ~ of adults at risk within the definitions of No secrets and local Policy and Procedures
• relate this to the appropriate Standards or Framework and legislation which applies to particular models of service delivery
• be confident in the 4 stages in Adult Safeguarding: alerting, referring, investigating and monitoring
• understand what measures to take should a member of staff be suspected of abusing an adult at risk
• evaluate the impact on a team of allegations of abuse towards a team member
• reflect on their practice with reference to the Sensitive Authority model of safeguarding
• know the sources of support for themselves both locally and nationally

Nature of training: maximum of 16 staff members in participative group work.
Exercises will range from lecture style input to discussion and small group work.

There will be an expectation of some basic knowledge of local policy and procedure. If this is not the case some pre-course reading will be necessary or a longer two day course offered.

Hand outs will be provided to reinforce all theoretical input.
Each organisation will take responsibility for providing copies of policy and procedure to participants, plus the county policy where relevant.
