Growing Up Well : GROW – self esteem for children and young people

Why choose this course?

• The Government has expanded the Troubled Families agenda to include children under school age.
• AYPH’s Key Data in Adolescence 2103 shows that half of all life time cases of psychiatric disorders start by age 14; around 13% of boys and 10% of girls aged 11-15 have mental health problems; in 2014, figures were published suggesting that over the last 2 years there has been a 70% increase in 10-14 year olds attending A&E for self-harm related reasons. 1 in 10 children and young people aged 5-16 suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder.
• GROW course is designed to work with children from a development age of 4 yrs old to 12 years old. The work can be adapted to work with older children. A workbook for 13-16 year olds is under development.
• It can be run either in small groups or one to one or with a child and parent/s together.
• It can either be a stand alone course or work alongside other programmes such as Freedom Programme within Domestic Violence services.
• There is a full quality assurance structure of monthly group supervision, a 6 monthly review and update day.

Course structure: This is a 3 day course which qualifies staff to roll out the 6 week GROW course or to work within the pre-existing relationships with a child or their family.

Length of course:
3 days                  Each day   9.00am – 4.00pm or the equivalent hourage

Expected outcomes ~ by the end of the GROW course participants will be able to

• explain the connection between thought and physical feelings and teach the settling effects of breathing techniques
• understand the causation of internal psychological drivers and negative self-talk and express them in age appropriate language
• use arts activities with confidence to provide fun and lightness to enhance  self esteem
• create a safe space to talk about painful and difficult issues without pressure
• validate the whole range of feelings and help them to be understood and expressed through games, drama and arts activities
• demonstrate to the children/ young people their intrinsic value through respect, kindness and acceptance
• work in partnership with parents and family members to improve relationships
• support family members with the underlying principles integrated throughout the GROW materials

Nature of course:
This course will use badge-making, collage, pictures, role play and drama. As some bodywork will be used it is important that participants wear loose, comfortable clothing.

Resources provided:
3 spiral bound 40 page workbooks, one for each age range; 3 x 35 page leaders’ guides; 1 memory stick with all copyrighted material in both Word and PDF
