Why choose this course?

  • many staff having done a basic awareness course need more
  • the target group are care staff / team leaders/ other professionals who have done the Basic Awareness course and are wanting to pass on Adult Safeguarding to the users of their service
  • this is suitable for staff who do not need the legislative knowledge from Advanced Skills but do need to be more familiar with the operational procedures and how these might affect the users of their service
  • after a strategy meeting and a protection plan have been put in place users of the service need to know how to best protect themselves against further abuse
  • key staff are involved in the monitoring process of safeguarding and will need to be able to support adults at risk in how to keep themselves safe

Length of course: I day 9.30 – 4.30
This course is also suitable for users of the service and/or carers.

Expected outcomes: by the end of this course staff will be able to

  • expand their ability to enable people to support themselves
  • explore the issues regarding risk and individual choice
  • work with the adult at risk to strengthen their identity
  • use a variety of communication techniques when there is communication impairment
  • increase an adult at risk’s knowledge of self advocacy
  • involve a person’s support network or circle of support
  • understand and know when to use the adult safeguarding procedures
  • know where to go for further resources
  • have more confidence in their ability to monitor and provide safeguarding

Nature of training: maximum of 16 staff members in participative group work.
Exercises will range from lecture style input to discussion and small group work.

There will be an expectation that participants will have already completed a Basic Awareness course in Adult protection or safeguarding and will have some knowledge of local policy and procedure.

Hand outs will be provided to reinforce all theoretical input.
Some visual as well as written work will be done in order to look at full communication.
